Ord

Ord
/ɔd/ (say awd)

noun
1. a river in the East Kimberley district of northern WA, dammed in 1970–72 as part of the Ord River Irrigation Scheme; the river's flood plains form a Ramsar wetland site.
2. Mount, a mountain in the King Leopold Ranges, WA. 936 m.
{named after Sir Harry Ord, governor of WA 1878–80}
The Ord River Irrigation Scheme was completed in 1972 with the opening of the main Ord River dam, which forms Lake Argyle, the scheme's major reservoir and the largest freshwater storage in mainland Australia. Lake Argyle has a storage capacity of 10 760 million cubic metres of water, which is sufficient to irrigate 40 000 ha in WA and 20 000 ha in the NT – land previously used for cattle. In its first 15 years agricultural problems (insect and bird pests) and economic factors (distance from markets) affected the success of the scheme, with cotton-growing becoming uneconomical by 1974. In the early years of the 21st century about 12 000 ha of irrigated land were under cultivation. Crops include mangoes, pumpkins, watermelons, sugar cane and sunflowers. A hydro-electric station at the base of the dam supplies power to Kununurra, Wyndham and the Argyle Diamond mine.
